The Ultimate Cannabis Butter Recipe

BY MARIE LODI

Ready to whip up a batch of pot brownies? Making your own cannabis infused brownies or cookies can be a grand ol’ time, especially when you’ve got a favorite strain in mind. However, edibles can have a very different effect than smoking, so while the following strain recommendations from MedMen can act as a guide, keep in mind that how you’ll react to homemade edibles, and edibles in general, can depend on various factors. Your edibles tolerance, the way you react to certain strains, or even how much you’ve eaten that day can all contribute to how your body may react. Plus, if you’re not a pro, making sure the cannabutter is evenly distributed can be tricky, which leaves room for experimentation. Above all, remember to go low and slow; eat half of a portion first, wait 2 hours, then see how you feel before eating the rest. Ask about these five strains during your next visit to a MedMen store:

Strawberry Bliss by Wonderbrett: As the name suggests, this strain is known for its dessert-like fragrance and taste. Smoking it will bring back sweet memories (literally) of eating cotton candy or summer strawberries, which makes it the perfect choice for an edible cooking component. This energetic sativa strain will boost your creativity while putting you in a good mood. Enjoy it as a daytime treat.

Padrino Purps by Fun Uncle: The scent and flavor of Padrino Purps is a sweet, fruity combination of berries and grapes, brought to you by the award-winning lineage of Grandaddy Purple and Larry OG. A potent indica strain, this will surely take you to another planet, whether enjoyed in an edible or in another form.

Wedding Cake by Ember Valley: If you’re gravitating towards a heavy, indica-dominant hybrid with a sweet flavor for your next kitchen endeavor, Wedding Cake is the strain to add to your shopping list. Clocking in at almost 23 percent THC, this is the kind of bud that will knock you off your feet, bringing you an intensely euphoric mental and body high. And if you want something with tasty flavor, you’ll love this sweet, vanilla, and fruity strain. Warning: you will almost certainly get munchies, so make sure you have some non-medicated treats on hand as well.

Sherbet by Henry’s Original: What could be a more fitting strain for cannabis edibles than one named after a delicious summer treat? Sherbet is the result of bringing together two favorites, Pink Panties and Girl Scout Cookies. That means a sweet, citrusy, candy-like taste, with a THC level of around 20 percent. Strong enough to make you want to giddily melt into the couch with a smile on your face, but maybe not bad enough to put you completely out of commission.

Zen by [statemade]: Does a strain that brings you perfectly balanced inner serenity sound like the ideal cannabutter ingredient? Look no further than zen, a hybrid flower from MedMen’s very own [statemade] line.

Once you’ve procured one of the above cannabis strains for your next DIY baking adventure, you’ll need a step-by-step cannabutter recipe from Jeff The 420 Chef:

JEFF’S ‘EZ’ LIGHT-TASTING CANNABUTTER

Makes 1 stick of butter

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 ⅓ sticks of butter (Jeff prefers unsalted grass fed butter, and says: “Kerrygold is the best!”)

  • ¼ oz. dried cannabis (grab one of the suggested strains above at your local MedMen)

  • Heat-resistant ceramic or glass dish (i.e. Pyrex)

  • Distilled water

  • Fine mesh strainer

  • Tea strainer

  • French Press coffee maker

  • Small Tupperware or bowl with cover (large enough to fit a melted stick of butter)

  • Bowl filled with ice water

  • Aluminum foil

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1: Rinse and Blanch your Herb

  • Coarsely grind or break up dry cannabis flower, and soak overnight in distilled water.

  • The next day, drain and rinse cannabis in the fine mesh strainer over the sink with more distilled water.

  • Place rinsed cannabis in tea strainer.

  • Bring water to a boil. Place tea strainer with cannabis in boiling water for 5 minutes.

  • Immediately remove tea strainer after 5 minutes, and place in ice water for 1 minute.

  • Remove from ice water, squeeze out excess water and break apart into small pieces onto oven safe ceramic or Pyrex baking dish.

  • Preheat oven to 300ºF. Spread blanched cannabis in dish evenly. Cover with foil; bake for 20 minutes to decarboxylate (a necessary step to maintain the cannabinoid’s psychoactive effects).

STEP 2: Infuse Butter

  • Fill a large pot or a portable water boiler with water and bring to a boil.

  • Place butter in the French Press and place French Press into large pot or water boiler to melt. The water line should be just above the melted butter line.

  • Gently mix decarbed cannabis into the melted butter.

  • Cover French Press with plunger and lid, but do not plunge yet.

  • Let butter simmer for 3 hours. Check water level in boiler every 20 minutes, and refill as necessary.

  • After 3 hours, push down plunger on French Press and pour into plastic butter dish or a similar storage container.

  • Place strained butter mixture into refrigerator until it solidifies.

  • Turn out re-solidified butter onto a paper towel to remove any residual water or moisture from butter, and blot butter dry. Place dried butter back into butter dish, and voila!
