We’re Celebrating Female-led Cannabis Companies

Cannabis has a reputation for being a predominantly male-dominated industry — and it still is. As of 2019, according to a Marijuana Business Daily survey, only 37% of the senior-level executive positions were held by women. But things are slowly changing with more female-led companies carving out a place for themselves in the industry. For Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting four brands that are shaping the future of cannabis with their unique vision and innovative products. From Potli’s infused honey to Humboldt Apothecary’s tinctures to Mellows’ delicious treats to Kikoko’s soothing teas, these entrepreneurs aren’t afraid to challenge the idea of what a female consumer looks like.

And in honor of Women’s History Month, we’re also donating 10% of the proceeds from sales of these brands to The Downtown Women’s Center. The Los Angeles-based organization’s mission is to end homelessness for women through housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy. With over 18,000 women impacted in the city, the center addresses the challenging circumstances that lead to housing insecurity. “We all must do more to advocate for affordable housing policies and economic mobility. [I encourage] everyone to speak with their local elected officials to support permanent supportive services,” says Amy Turk, Chief Executive Officer.

MedMen nominates: Potli

Why: Inspired by their conservative Asian immigrant mothers’ affinity for holistic plant wellness, founders Christine Yi and Felicity Chen saw a hole in the burgeoning cannabis market for healthy edibles that could be consumed daily. 

Purpose: To help people feel empowered by edibles as opposed to feeling disempowered by them. 

Cannabis Career Motto: Lead by your own needs, create products that usher in more female consumers, and think deeply about the change you wish to see — then be it! 

MedMen nominates: Humboldt Apothecary

Why: As long-time herbalists, the founders Gillian Levy and Susan Cleverdon envision cannabis as an herb that supports wellness and mind and body balance. 

Purpose: Empower people to experience relief from ailments without the unwanted side effects pharmaceuticals and other medicines.

Cannabis Career Motto: If you're just starting out in the cannabis field, it is absolutely essential to surround yourself with a highly competent team of people.

MedMen nominates: Kikoko

Why: Inspired by a dear friend who battled cancer, co-founders Jennifer Chapin and Amanda Jones built their high-quality cannabis-infused tea and tincture brand through hard work, couch-surfing, and transparency. And who doesn’t love a cup of hot tea? 

Purpose: Create a low-dose, cannabis wellness product that would help with sleep, pain, anxiety, low libido and just add more joy to their lives.

Cannabis Career Motto: Make sure you have enough money to weather the industry challenges, learn to love solving problems, form a great team, and remain unrelentingly persistent.

MedMen nominates: Mellows 

Why: Because founder Stephanie Hua was a culinary arts school graduate and decided to make beautiful, giftable, and delicious marshmallows for grown-ups.

Purpose: To elevate the edibles experience with a lose-dose product that can be enjoyed in its entirety — with overdoing it. 

Cannabis Career Motto: Do your research and get hands-on experience. Test, iterate and test again. It’s up to us to shape, define (or redefine!) what the cannabis industry is and who the consumer is.
