Another day, another CBD serum launch. Whatever your biggest skincare focuses are, there’s probably a potent potion out there to help, whether it’s a soothing face serum for sensitive skin or some kind of oil for dry skin. Are you searching for the absolute best anti-aging serum, or a hydration serum to use overnight? Skincare obsessives and experts alike are bound to have emphatic though perhaps varying answers for all of the above. But one thing’s for sure: serums, and the broader skin care market, show no signs of waning anytime soon. The skin care business is booming. According to a report from Acumen Research and Consulting, it’s forecasted to be worth $184 Billion by 2026. Pair that with the $25 billion expected for CBD, and there’s undoubtedly potential for a seriously winning combo. So it’s not a huge shock that CBD serums are some of the most popular CBD-centric products.
So what’s so beneficial about adding CBD serum to a skin care regiment? First of all, it’s important to understand what serums do. For the uninformed, a serum is generally a product used to target a specific concern, like dehydration, wrinkles, or dullness. According to Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital, a serum is a general term for a skin care product that is designed to deliver high concentrations of a particular active ingredient to the skin. “There are serums for every skin type and need, and there isn’t one particular serum that is right for everyone,” Dr. Zeichner adds.
CBD for skin
CBD as an ingredient in serum makes sense because you’re able to pack in high concentrations instead; in heavier creams, it runs the risk of being diluted. “CBD is perhaps the hottest skin care ingredient right now,” Dr. Zeichner says. “Not only is it being commonly used by consumers, but it is being evaluated for medical use.” He also points out that its popularity runs parallel with the organic beauty trend. After all, what could be more green than cannabis? “Many consumers are looking for natural ingredients like CBD oil to treat their skin,” Dr. Zeichner explains.
So should you ditch your current serum for one with CBD? It depends on whether you have a specific skin issue that might benefit from what CBD has to offer, or whether you just want to experiment, in general. “CBD itself is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties, and may be useful in treating a variety of skin issues including eczema and even acne,” Dr. Zeichner says. But if you’re one of those lucky folks who don't have to worry about breakouts or atopic dermatitis, you might still be able to benefit from a CBD-infused serum. As Dr. Zeichner points out, “CBD-containing serums are great to help hydrate and soothe the skin.”
