DIY Healthy Cannabis Snacks


Sometimes the best party is the one you throw at home. A night of Netflix binge-watching on the couch with your favorite snacks can be a delightful reprieve from an otherwise busy professional and social life. To enhance the experience, lace those bites with some choice cannabis—it’s easier than you think, and suddenly the latest season of Bojack Horseman will glide by even easier.

Jessica Catalano should know. The cannabis chef and food writer, who authored The Ganja Kitchen Revolutionhas been a pioneer of strain-specific cooking since 2010, helping others to make the most of their buds on the stovetop. She’s a proponent of matching the flavor profile of a particular flower with a dish—think Lemon Kush to highlight the uniquely herbal undertones of Vietnamese spring rolls. And she knows all about snacking on edibles while watching TV.

“I approach snacks with two main guidelines: healthy and low-dosed. It’s important when you’re in a Netflix binge session to snack on foods that are nutritious and good for your body versus just mindlessly eating high-calorie junk,” Catalano says, adding that a light dosage is also key to avoid overconsumption. That way, you can have more than just one of your preferred edible. She’s also a firm believer in playing to your audience and programming. As she delicately puts it, “Some people don’t necessarily like eating a rare steak while watching American Horror Story.”

Ahead, check out two Mexican-inspired, Netflix binge-worthy recipes from Catalano that she finds works for nearly everyone huddled around the TV, along with notes on how to nail your infusion.

Super Lemon Haze Mexican Guacamole & Chips

Serves 4, as an appetizer

4 Hass avocados
1 sweet white onion
2 small heads of garlic
1 cup small cherry tomatoes
1 lime
1 ounce Super Lemon Haze-Infused Olive Oil*
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Cracked pepper and sea salt to taste
Corn tortilla chips for dipping

1. Remove the skins and seeds from the avocados then mash them in a medium mixing bowl.

2. Dice the onion and cherry tomatoes into 1/4-inch cubes and finely mince the garlic cloves. Add onion, tomatoes, and garlic to the mashed avocado. Cut the lime in half then squeeze the juice of both halves onto this mixture.

3. Add the Super Lemon Haze-Infused Olive Oil (recipe at bottom), paprika, chili powder, cayenne pepper, cracked pepper, and sea salt. Stir this mixture until fully combined and check to see if you need to season with a little more cracked pepper and sea salt.

4. Chill for 30 minutes to develop the flavors and serve chilled or at room temperature.

Super Lemon Haze Roasted Green Chili Pepper Salsa

2 cups diced roasted green chilis
1 ounce Super Lemon Haze-Infused Olive Oil*
1/2 cup diced sweet onion
1 cup diced tomatillo
1/4 minced cilantro
1/4 teaspoon cane sugar
2 diced jalapeño peppers
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

1. Combine the roasted green chilies, infused olive oil (recipe below), sweet onion, tomatillo, cilantro, cane sugar, jalapeno peppers, and fresh lime juice in a pan.

2. Cook on medium-low for 10-15 minutes, until onions are translucent.

3. Transfer to a food processor and pulse until well combined. Let this mixture chill in the refrigerator for 10 minutes then serve. Add chips for dipping, smother over nachos, pour over a burrito, or make loaded fiesta fries.

*Super Lemon Haze-Infused Olive Oil

Decarb the cannabis flower (10mg total of THC works as a relatively low dosage for each dish) on a lined cookie sheet for 25 minutes at 220 degrees. Then, grind it up, add it to the oil in a double boiler for 1 hour on medium, and then strain with cheesecloth or another cotton bag strainer.

“I recommend strains that possess citrus terpenes that would pair well with the flavors of the citrus: Key Lime Pie, Lemon Kush, or Lemon Cookies are strains that would be ideal if you don’t have Super Lemon Haze,” Catalano says. But no need to stress if you don’t happen to have any of these bright-tasting strains on hand; any cannabis will do, really, she explains:  “If you cannot find these strains, don’t panic—just follow your nose and taste buds, and don’t forget to have fun!”
